Dinosaur alphabet named as a ‘best gift for 6 year olds’ by The Independent

I was thrilled to see my Dinosaur alphabet print included in The Independent’s ‘Best Gifts for Six Year Olds to inspire fun and learning’ recently on their IndyBest website, compiled by Martha Alexander and a judging panel of discerning 6 year-olds!

It really is amazing and an honour to see my artwork alongside other brilliant toys and products, and it confirms my beliefs that my alphabet and name illustrations provide learning and information as well as sparking imagination (as well as making great gifts!).

In some respects, my alphabet prints aren’t actually about learning the alphabet. They do help with that of course, but another way these prints benefit children is to inspire imaginations, to encourage children to look closely, to spot amusing little details and to really look at the features of the artwork, what’s been illustrated and how it interacts with each letter.

So when Christmas and birthdays are often so much about TOYS and EXCITEMENT, why does an alphabet print make a great gift? Here are some reasons:

  • They last for years. And years. And not just that - they will be enjoyed for years.

  • The alphabet print themes aren’t really about characters or phases that children grow out of quickly, they are almost timeless themes. Even children in double digits love these alphabet prints.

  • My illustrative style is pretty grown-up even when illustrating items for children, and because the alphabet prints aren’t in a babyish style children appreciate them more, they feel more grown-up on their bedroom walls.

  • Fans of dinosaurs, in my experience, tend to want dinosaurs to be ‘realistic’. They usually know all about dinosaurs and can name loads of them, easily! So they are fascinated by the ‘realistic’ illustration of the dinosaurs in the alphabet print, enjoy seeing what each one is doing, and looking at their names - some they will know, some will be new to them.

  • They spark discussion, chat and word-learning. Children love to spot animals, and perhaps after a trip to a zoo or museum, children can chat about the things they saw and spot the same animals in their alphabet print and keep on thinking about them!

  • If children love the dinosaurs in their alphabet, you can download the Jurassic Fantastic printable colouring pack and colour in the actual line drawings I created for the alphabet! They can be stuck on card, cut out and played with - another tool for imaginative play.

  • It is a good thing for children to be given a gift that may well have an instant positive reaction when they open it - but actually gives the child more over time rather than perhaps yet another toy may do.

  • My Alphabet prints coordinate with my children’s name illustrations, initial letter illustrations, number birthday cards and non-number birthday cards, so you can coordinate items for a gift or to create a bedroom decor theme really easily.

  • Alphabet prints don’t require batteries! Or make noises! (believe me - you’ll get brownie points from the parents for giving this instead!)
