Agatha Christie's Greenway, Devon
Greenway is a beautiful estate on the River Dart near Galmpton, Devon. Greenway House was once the holiday home of the iconic author Agatha Christie, and the National Trust have preserved the house as it was when Agatha stayed there from the 1930s.
Greenway House is a stunning Georgian building dating from 1780. The interior is delightfully 1930s, and when visiting I learned that the National Trust have brought nothing into the house, all the items in the interior are authentic to Agatha Christie’s time owning the property and holidaying there.
I loved the dinner bells in the hallway, the 1930s kitchen and crockery, the original flagstone floor. The wall frieze in the Library painted by World War II serviceman Lt Marshall Lee, a member of the US. Coast Guard stationed at the house in the run up to the D Day landings, is stunning and provides a very real insight into the period.
I wanted to illustrate the house as I enjoy the clean lines of the house and the symmetry of Georgian architecture and proportions, together with the sweeping curve of the lawns where you can sit and look over the river.
The cream deckchairs complete the picture and definitely give the feel of a 1930s Agatha Christie murder mystery!
In fact several Agatha Christie novels use locations and areas of the Greenway grounds within her plots.
